About this Japanese White Pine Bonsai, 16 Years Old (Pinus parviflora 'Aoi')
16 years in the making and now 18 to 19 inches, this Aoi Japanese white pine carries straight needles that are silvery blue on one face and green on the other, held for several seasons so the canopy always looks full. The branches are sturdy and well built, the bark a quiet silver-grey, and small cones are produced in quantity. The overall form is slender and architectural, an evergreen that reads as a deliberate vertical accent and lends an unmistakably Asian character wherever it stands. Pines want strong light and free-draining soil, so grow it outdoors.

This is a living Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Strictly outdoor. It needs full seasons, including a genuine winter dormancy, and will decline indoors
- Light
- Full sun. More sun produces shorter needles, denser foliage and better color
- Water
- DRY. One of the driest of all bonsai. Water thoroughly, then let it dry appreciably before watering again; never keep it wet
- USDA zones
- Roughly 4b–7 (some sources cite 5–9); reliably hardy to about -20°F (-29°C) when fully acclimated
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / water-retentive soil — made worse on trees grown on their own roots
