About this Japanese Green Maple Bonsai, Semi-Cascade, 13 Years Old (Acer palmatum)

Trained in the semi-cascade manner, this Acer palmatum sends a single branch 16 inches out and down from the trunk, while the tree itself stands 18 inches tall on a 15 by 17 inch base. It is 13 years old. Green Japanese maples are hardy and simple enough to grow, and this one shows to advantage on a deck rail or a garden table where the falling line can hang clear. Sun encourages the best color in spring and again late in the season. Deciduous, and kept outdoors.

Light: Full morning sun with light afternoon shade in summer; protect foliage above ~85 °F (30 °C) to prevent leaf scorch
Water: Keep evenly and consistently moist: never let the rootball dry out, but do not leave it waterlogged. On the "wet" side of the spectrum.
USDA zones: 5 to 8 (some cultivars tolerate 9; protect roots below zone 6 in containers)
#1 cause of death: Verticillium wilt (often introduced by dirty tools / summer pruning); also leaf scorch and root drying
