About this Coral Bark Japanese Maple Bonsai, 18 Years Old (Acer palmatum 'Sango-Kaku')
18 years of growth stand behind this 'Sango-kaku', now 20 to 21 inches tall. Its distinction lies in the wood itself: young bark of a coral-red that comes into its own once the leaves have gone, holding the display through fall and winter when little else is happening. Cold deepens the tone, pushing it toward salmon. Through spring and summer the foliage is a light green-yellow, turning clear bright yellow before it drops. This is a deciduous maple and an outdoor tree, and its winter months are as much a part of the year as its summer ones.
