A fig whose range runs across South and Southeastern Asia, Ficus benjamina 'orientalis' has proved particularly well suited to bonsai training: it thickens into a sturdy trunk, divides readily into useful branch structure, and carries shiny foliage. This one is 5 years old and 7 to 8 inches tall. It can remain indoors through the year, and the brighter the spot the more compact the growth it makes. Water once the soil surface begins to dry, and keep the pot away from cold draughts, which figs of this kind never take kindly to.
