About this Large Flowering Jaboticaba Bonsai, 16 Years Old (Plinia cauliflora)
16 years old and 20 to 21 inches tall. The Jaboticaba, Eugenia cauliflora, comes from southern Brazil and belongs to the myrtle family, which makes it a relation of the guava. Its species name is the informative part: cauliflora refers to flowering and fruiting directly on the trunk and older wood rather than at the shoot tips. In bloom the bark all but disappears beneath clustered white bloom, a habit few other trees can offer. Grown indoors, the trunk develops the pale, flaking surface typical of the species.
