About this Flowering Jaboticaba Bonsai, 26 Years Old (Plinia cauliflora)
Eugenia cauliflora, 26 years old, 17 by 16 by 22 inches tall. The jaboticaba comes from southern Brazil, belongs to the myrtle family and counts the guava among its relatives; the name is said aloud in five syllables, exactly as it is spelled. Its species epithet, cauliflora, records the habit that sets the tree apart, since flowers and then fruit are produced directly on the trunk and the mature branches rather than at the shoot tips. In flower the trunk is sheathed in massed white blossom, each bloom small and gathered into tight bunches. Grown indoors.
Jaboticaba bonsai care
This is a living Jaboticaba (Plinia cauliflora). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoors in warm seasons/climates; indoor (bright, humid) in cold climates over winter
- Light
- Bright light to full sun; bright indirect light indoors near a sunny window
- Water
- Wet-leaning: keep the rootball evenly moist, never bone-dry; loves humidity, but must drain (overwatering rots roots)
- USDA zones
- 9b to 11 (tender; protect/bring indoors below ~30°F / -1°C)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering, OR cold/dry-air shock, plus chronic low humidity and chlorosis from hard/alkaline water
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Jaboticaba bonsai care guide.
