About this Flowering Dwarf Sleeping Hibiscus Bonsai, 12 Years Old (Malvaviscus alboretus 'Compactus')

Malvaviscus alboretus 'compactus' is an adorable miniature evergreen from tropical Mexico and Cuba, a member of the mallows. Its petals only partly unfurl, staying rolled into a narrow scarlet funnel, and that habit gave the plant the names Turk's cap and cardinals hat; kept warm, it flowers all year round. Fruit sets green while immature and deepens to red at maturity. This tree is 12 years old and 15 inches tall, grown indoors, where warmth and a bright position keep the flowering cycle turning. Pinching the shoot tips holds the habit tight.
