About this Willow Leaf Ficus Bonsai, Trained (Ficus nerifolia/salisafolia)
Thirty five years of growth stand behind this Ficus nerifolia, also sold as Mexicana ficus, now 16 by 23 by 34 inches and seated in a 13 inch brown round drum mica container. The leaves are long, narrow and light green, hanging in a way that recalls a weeping willow, which is where the common name comes from. Beneath them the trunk is unusually heavy for a tree of this height, which gives the planting a settled, long established look. Willow leaf ficus takes to indoor life readily, asking for good light, warmth and steady watering.
Willow Leaf Ficus bonsai care
This is a living Willow Leaf Ficus (Ficus salicaria). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Indoor: a houseplant and indoor bonsai; outside in summer above about 60°F (16°C), or nights above 50°F (10°C) in Bonsai Empire's FAQ; outdoors all year in the tropics
- Light
- Full or nearly full sun gives the smallest leaves, though BCI says it grows from deep shade to full sun; Wigert's says full or partial sun; Chicago Botanic lists partial shade for F. salicifolia
- Water
- Water generously when the surface is slightly dry; never let it dry out completely or stand in water
- USDA zones
- 12 to 13 in a pot: zone 13's winter lows of 60 to 70°F (16 to 21°C) stay above the bonsai floors of 50 to 60°F (10 to 16°C), zone 12's lows of 50 to 60°F come close to them, so bring it in on colder nights there. In the ground NC State gives 10 to 11 for the plant it calls F. neriifolia and Chicago Botanic 10 to 12 for F. salicifolia
- Main risks
- Main risks, not ranked by any source: cold, root rot from overwatering, borers, and dry air and poor light, which weaken it and cause leaf drop
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Willow Leaf Ficus bonsai care guide.
