About this Extra Large Flowering Podocarpus Bonsai, 17 Years Old (Podocarpus macrophyllus)
At 17 years and 20 to 21 inches, this is a substantial Podocarpus macrophyllus, the conifer known as Buddhist Pine or Chinese Yew. Growth is dense and evergreen, the pointed leathery leaves a deep green on rigid, symmetrically placed branches. The species is unisexual: cones carry the male flowers, while female flowers are formed of thickened cylindrical scales and give way to fruit that is edible, fleshy and brightly coloured. New foliage appears light green before it hardens off. Grown for indoor use, and slow enough in habit that its shape holds between prunings.
