About this Flowering Parrot's Beak Bonsai, 25 Years Old (Gmelina philippensis)

Gmelina philippensis, called Parrot's Beak and pronounced with a silent G, carries foliage that shifts between an oval and an ivy-like or duck-foot outline. This specimen is 25 years old and measures 9 by 12 inches, standing 18 inches tall. Flowering happens occasionally rather than on a fixed schedule: yellow blooms emerge from the tip of a tube formed by overlapping bracts, and the resemblance of that structure to a curved beak accounts for the common name. Each pod holds one seed, and the fruit that follows is fleshy. Grown indoors.

Parrot's Beak bonsai care

This is a living Parrot's Beak (Gmelina philippensis). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Outdoors through the warm season; indoors for winter
Light
Full sun to bright partial sun; the brightest window you have if kept indoors
Water
Consistently moist, never bone-dry — but the mix must drain freely
USDA zones
9–11 outdoors year-round; indoor or greenhouse everywhere else
#1 cause of death
Cold over winter — it is stressed below 55°F, which is warmer than most people's idea of "safe indoors"

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Parrot's Beak bonsai care guide.
