About this Flowering Parrot's Beak Bonsai, 21 Years Old (Gmelina philippensis)
Gmelina philippensis, whose initial G is silent, is grown for its curious flowers. Overlapping bracts form a tube from the end of which a yellow bloom emerges, and the resulting shape suggested a parrot's beak to whoever named it. Each pod holds a single seed, and the fruit that follows is fleshy. Flowering happens occasionally rather than on schedule. The leaves vary a good deal in outline, from oval to ivy-like or the shape of a duck's foot. This plant is 21 years old, 16 inches tall and 13 by 14 inches wide, and grows indoors.
