About this Medium Flowering Dwarf Barbados Cherry Bonsai, Weeping, 7 Years Old (Malpighia pendiculata)
Malpighia pendiculata, 7 years old and 7 inches tall, a dwarf weeping form of the Barbados Cherry. The genus commemorates Marcello Malpighi, the distinguished naturalist who worked in Bologna and lived from 1628 to 1693. It comes originally from Curacao, Trinidad and the island of St Croix, and grows naturally in a pendulous way, twigs and branches hanging rather than reaching upward, and the training here follows that inclination. Flowers are rose-pink and frequently borne several at a time in a cyme. The small fruit that follows them is edible. It is kept indoors.
Barbados Cherry bonsai care
This is a living Barbados Cherry (Malpighia glabra). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoors through the warm season; must come in before nights reach 45°F (7°C)
- Light
- Full sun — 6–8 hours direct. A south window plus a grow light indoors
- Water
- Let the surface dry slightly, then water thoroughly. Never bone-dry, never soggy
- USDA zones
- 10–11 outdoors year-round; indoor or greenhouse everywhere else
- #1 cause of death
- Cold — left outdoors too far into autumn. It is sold as an "indoor bonsai", which makes owners worry about light and forget about temperature
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Barbados Cherry bonsai care guide.
