About this Flowering Barbados Cherry Group Bonsai, Three Tree Forest, 4 Years Old (Malpighia pendiculata)
Three trees are planted together here as a forest group, each 4 years old, the composition standing 8 to 9 inches tall. Malpighia pendiculata is native to St. Croix, Trinidad and Curacao, and the genus name honours Marcello Malpighia, a distinguished naturalist who worked in Bologna, Italy between 1628 and 1693. Left to itself the species is pendulous, twigs and branchlets alike weeping, which lends the group a soft outline. The flowers are rose-pink and often gathered several together in a cyme, and the small fruit that follows is edible. Grown indoors.

This is a living Barbados Cherry (Malpighia glabra). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Full sun — 6–8 hours direct. A south window plus a grow light indoors
- Water
- Let the surface dry slightly, then water thoroughly. Never bone-dry, never soggy
- USDA zones
- 10–11 outdoors year-round; indoor or greenhouse everywhere else

- Cold — left outdoors too far into autumn. It is sold as an "indoor bonsai", which makes owners worry about light and forget about temperature
