About this Large Flowering Dwarf Barbados Cherry Bonsai, Weeping, 12 Years Old (Malpighia pendiculata)
12 years old and 14 to 16 inches tall, this dwarf weeping Barbados cherry comes originally from Curacao, from Trinidad and from St. Croix. The genus name commemorates Marcello Malpighia, the distinguished naturalist of Bologna in Italy who lived from 1628 to 1693. Its habit is naturally pendulous, twigs and branches falling away from the trunk without persuasion, so the weeping outline owes little to wiring. Rose-pink flowers appear, often several gathered together in a cyme, and the small fruit that follows is edible. Grow it indoors, where flower, fruit and weeping form arrive on one plant.
Barbados Cherry bonsai care
This is a living Barbados Cherry (Malpighia glabra). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoors through the warm season; must come in before nights reach 45°F (7°C)
- Light
- Full sun — 6–8 hours direct. A south window plus a grow light indoors
- Water
- Let the surface dry slightly, then water thoroughly. Never bone-dry, never soggy
- USDA zones
- 10–11 outdoors year-round; indoor or greenhouse everywhere else
- #1 cause of death
- Cold — left outdoors too far into autumn. It is sold as an "indoor bonsai", which makes owners worry about light and forget about temperature
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Barbados Cherry bonsai care guide.
