About this Large Flowering Bougainvillea Bonsai, 18 Years Old (Pink pixie)
18 years of growth have given this 'Pink Pixie' bougainvillea a woody, characterful base at 13 to 15 inches. The genus takes its name from Louis Antoine de Bougainville, the French navigator who lived from 1729 to 1811, and the plants themselves belong to the warmer regions of the Americas, from the tropics into the subtropics. What reads as a flower is in fact a set of leaf bracts at the shoot tips, colouring a brilliant deep pink and thin enough to have earned the plant its paper flower nickname. It likes sun, so indoors the brightest available position is the right one.
Bougainvillea bonsai care
This is a living Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor in warm seasons and climates; below about 50°F it must come indoors or to a warm, bright space, and it winters indoors only in the brightest light
- Light
- Full sun, 6 to 8 hours direct daily: intense light is essential for flowering
- Water
- Dry-leaning. Prefers drier soil and air; water thoroughly then let it approach dry. A slight dry stress actually triggers blooming
- USDA zones
- 9 to 11 (frost-free); can stay outdoors year-round only in zone 10+
- #1 cause of death
- Overwatering / root rot (often combined with cold)
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Bougainvillea bonsai care guide.
