About this Flowering Bougainvillea Bonsai, Exposed Roots, 16 by 26 Inches (Pink pixie)
Thirty-two years have gone into this Pink Pixie bougainvillea, which now measures 14 by 16 by 26 inches with the roots deliberately exposed above the soil line of its 10-inch Aztec orange container. The genus is named for Louis Antoine de Bougainville, the French navigator of 1729 to 1811, and the plants themselves come from tropical and subtropical America. What passes for a flower is a set of papery leaf bracts at the shoot tips that colour a deep pink. It wants sun and warmth, so give it the brightest position indoors.
Bougainvillea bonsai care
This is a living Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor in full sun through the growing season; in cold climates it winters indoors in a bright room; Bonsai Mirai says not long-term inside, though Yorkshire Bonsai grows it inside in the UK
- Light
- Full sun, 6 to 8 hours of direct sun a day; it will not flower without direct sun
- Water
- Prefers drier soil: water thoroughly once the soil gets dry, let it dry slightly between waterings, never let it stay soggy; Bonsai Empire prefers water of pH 6 to 6.5 and avoids very hard (calcareous) water
- USDA zones
- 9 to 11 is NC State's in-ground figure for B. glabra; NC State's genus page gives 9b to 10b; Bonsai Mirai keeps a potted tree outdoors all year only in zone 10 and above
- Main risks
- Main risks, not ranked by any source: root rot from constant wetness; frost and cold; too little light
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Bougainvillea bonsai care guide.
