About this Trident Maple Bonsai, Trained, 21 Years Old (Acer buergerianum)
21 years old, measuring 14 by 16 inches and standing 26 inches tall. Acer buergerianum is grown above all for its autumn foliage, whose color is superb. Its small leaves resist scorching in dry spells and carry three short lobes set close together, which is where the name trident comes from. New growth often emerges bronze to purple, and the spring flowers are small enough to pass unnoticed. The pale brown bark is dappled and exfoliates with age to reveal grey, orange and brown beneath. Grow it outdoors.
