About this Littleleaf Boxwood Bonsai, Trained (Buxus microphylla 'Compacta')

Fourteen years of training have produced a compact 7 by 8 by 9 inch tree, presented on an 8-inch faux rock. Littleleaf boxwood is a Japanese evergreen with small obovate leaves of a light green, and its spring flowers are inconspicuous enough to pass unnoticed. Buxus is the Latin name for the genus; the English word boxwood recalls the carved decorative boxes the timber was turned into, though it may equally describe the squared stems of young plants. The tight foliage is what makes it valued for bonsai.
