About this Littleleaf Boxwood Bonsai, 10 Years Old (Buxus microphylla 'Compacta')

Littleleaf boxwood is an evergreen native to Japan, long valued as bonsai material and carrying obovate leaves of a light green. Buxus is what the plant is called in Latin; the English name points to the timber once used for carved decorative boxes, though another reading traces it to the square stems of young plants. Spring flowers are produced but count for little visually. This 'Compacta' is 10 years old and 7 to 8 inches tall. Boxwood grows densely and takes clipping well, which is why it has served for topiary as well as for bonsai.
