About this Hinoki Cypress Bonsai, Trained, 42 Years Old (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis')
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' is a miniature conifer, the smallest form of the species and uncommon in gardens. Its foliage is flat and fan-shaped, deep green above and edged with blue on the reverse, and the cones it carries are about the size of a pea. Growth is very slow and the plant is hardy, so it will never gain much size. 42 years have gone into this trained example, which stands 34 inches tall across a 15 by 17 inch base. An outdoor position is required.

This is a living Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

- Full sun to bright light; needs strong light, but constant foliage maintenance is required so interior gets light
- Water
- MOIST (but not wet). Keep slightly and evenly moist; never let it fully dry, and never let it sit waterlogged

- Roughly 4–8; larger trees with more soil tolerate cold better than small specimens in shallow pots
- #1 cause of death
- Phytophthora root rot from waterlogged soil (no cure once established)
