About this Large Ponytail Palm Bonsai, 10 Years Old (Beaucarnea recurvata)
Beaucarnea recurvata at 10 years old, 16 to 18 inches tall. Everything about this plant follows from the swollen base of its trunk, rough and scaly to the touch, which has earned it the alternative name of Elephant's Foot. That thickened base works as a water reservoir, and the species can go as long as four weeks unwatered without ill effect. The narrow arching leaves spill from the top of the trunk in the loose ponytail that gives the plant its usual name. It is grown indoors.
