About this Medium Ponytail Palm Bonsai, 7 Years Old (Beaucarnea recurvata)
The swollen base is what draws the eye on this Beaucarnea recurvata, 7 years old and 14 to 15 inches tall. Its surface is scaly to the touch and to the eye, resembling an elephant's foot closely enough that the plant answers to that name as well. That thickened base is a water store built for drought, and it lets the plant go ten to fourteen days between waterings without ill effect. Kept as an indoor plant, it asks little in the way of routine attention.
