About this Korean Hornbeam Bonsai, 12 Years Old (Carpinus coreana)
12 years old and standing 10 to 11 inches, this Korean hornbeam shows the short internodes that make the species the one hornbeam growers reach for first; the trait allows dense twigging without the long, leggy shoots other carpinus produce. Leaves are pale green with finely serrated margins, and in autumn they run through orange and yellow before the tree goes bare. Being deciduous, it should be kept outdoors so that it experiences the full cycle of the year. The bare winter silhouette is as much a part of the display as the summer foliage.
Korean Hornbeam bonsai care
This is a living Korean Hornbeam (Carpinus turczaninowii). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor year-round — it requires a genuine winter dormancy
- Light
- Full sun to light afternoon shade; some shade in peak summer to prevent leaf scorch
- Water
- On the drier side — let the soil approach (but never reach) dryness between waterings; do not keep soggy
- USDA zones
- 5–8 (thrives in zone 7; needs protection at the cold edge)
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering / sour, compacted soil — and branch dieback from canker
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Korean Hornbeam bonsai care guide.
