About this Flowering Vietnamese Blue Bell Bonsai (Trifidacanthus unifoliatium)

Sixty-five years of growth stand behind this Vietnamese blue bell, 15 by 19 by 19 inches, planted in a 12-inch emerald-green hexagonal glazed pot carrying a raised lion-head medallion on each face. The species, sometimes placed with Desmodium, is genuinely rare in cultivation and produces fragrant purple flowers that carry a distinct scent of grapes, alongside large thorns. The bark is gnarled and the nebari exceptional for a tree of this size. It wants full sun, moderate water, and no frost.

Vietnamese Blue Bell bonsai care

This is a living Vietnamese Blue Bell (Trifidacanthus unifoliolatus). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Outdoors only when nights are reliably above 60°F; indoors the rest of the year
Light
Bright light to full sun, with shelter from harsh afternoon glare
Water
Evenly moist — let the top inch dry, then water thoroughly. Much less in winter
USDA zones
Not formally documented; treat as 10–11 based on its tropical native range
#1 cause of death
Cold exposure, with root rot from an over-generous reading of "evenly moist" close behind

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Vietnamese Blue Bell bonsai care guide.
