Carissa macrocarpa, the Natal dwarf plum, at 4 years old and 6 to 7 inches tall. This is a semi-tropical evergreen that flowers freely, opening star-shaped white blossom with a distinct fragrance; where pollination follows, those flowers set dark red, plum-shaped fruit that is edible. Care indoors is easy, which makes it a sensible choice for anyone keeping a flowering tropical in the house for the first time. Small leathery leaves stay on the plant through the year, so it never looks bare between flushes.
