About this Flowering Crape Myrtle Bonsai, 14 Years Old (Lagerstroemia indica 'Black Diamond')
Lagerstroemia indica 'Black Diamond' at 14 years old, 20 to 21 inches tall. The selection is grown for the contrast between leaf and flower: foliage in deep burgundy shading toward black, set against vividly red bloom that opens in early summer and carries on into fall. It is a hardy, low-maintenance ornamental, and that color interest runs across the whole second half of the growing year rather than passing in a fortnight. It loses its leaves over winter and belongs outdoors. Crape myrtle flowers on new wood, so pruning is normally done while the tree is bare.
