What to look for
- Leaves: Sudden wilting, scorching, yellowing, and browning of leaves on one branch or one side of the tree, often in summer; affected leaves may hang on; partial then progressive dieback.
- Whole tree: One-sided or branch-by-branch collapse rather than uniform decline; the tree may struggle on for years or die quickly.

Verticillium wilt is a soil-borne fungal disease that invades a tree's water-conducting vessels and plugs them, so the tree effectively dies of thirst branch by branch. It is the classic, much-feared killer of maples — especially Japanese and trident maples — but affects many broadleaf species. It often strikes suddenly, taking one branch or one side of the tree while the rest still looks healthy.
Causes
The fungus persists in soil and infected plant material and enters through the roots; spread by contaminated soil, tools, and infected stock; stress worsens it. It is not airborne.
Commonly confused with
Drought and root rot wilt the whole tree fairly evenly; verticillium is typically one branch/side. Canker shows a localised sunken bark lesion. The vascular streaking under the bark of a wilted branch, plus one-sided dieback on a maple, strongly suggests verticillium.
Which species are affected
Maples are the headline hosts (Japanese, trident, field, amur, sycamore, paperbark); also many other broadleaf species. Conifers are generally not affected.
Treatment
There is no chemical cure. Prune out wilted/dead wood well into healthy tissue, sterilising tools between cuts; keep the tree as unstressed as possible (correct, steady watering and feeding) to help it wall off the fungus — some trees survive for years. If a tree dies, do not reuse its soil for susceptible species, and sterilise tools and pots.
Prevention
Use clean soil and tools; buy healthy stock; don't reuse soil from a verticillium casualty for maples; avoid stressing maples (steady water, no scorch); disinfect cutting tools between trees.
