Overview

Wire bite is the spiral scarring left when training wire is not removed before the branch grows thick enough to swell around it. It is purely a handling problem, not a disease, but it is one of the most common ways a developing bonsai is disfigured — the marks can take years to grow out, and in bad cases the wire can ring a branch and choke it.

Causes

Leaving wire on too long; wiring fast-growing species in the growing season and not checking it; applying wire too tightly.

Commonly confused with

Not really a disease — but swelling can be mistaken for canker or insect galls. The tell-tale even spiral following the (former) wire path identifies it.

Which species are affected

All wired species; fast-thickening and thin-barked trees scar quickest (Chinese/Siberian elm, maples, crepe myrtle, junipers, privet, ginseng ficus).

Treatment

Remove the wire immediately (cut it off in short pieces rather than unwinding, to avoid snapping branches). Light marks grow out over a season or two; deep scars take longer and may need to be hidden in the design. If a branch is nearly girdled, reduce stress on it and let it recover.

Prevention

Check wired branches every few weeks in the growing season; remove wire before it begins to bite (often within 2–3 months on vigorous species); re-wire if more shaping is needed; protect bark with raffia on delicate species; don't over-tighten.
