What to look for

Overview

In bonsai, winter damage comes in two forms. (1) Frozen roots: even a hardy tree's roots are far less cold-tolerant than its top, and roots sitting in a small pot can freeze and die when the same tree would be fine in the ground. (2) Cold/frost on tender species: tropicals and marginally-hardy trees are burned or killed outright by frost. Evergreens can also suffer winter desiccation — drying out when frozen roots can't replace water lost from foliage in cold wind/sun.

Causes

Leaving potted roots unprotected in hard freezes; a deciduous/temperate tree's roots freezing in a small pot; tender species exposed to frost; cold drying winter wind on evergreens (desiccation); and late spring frosts hitting tender new growth.

Commonly confused with

Root rot also gives soft brown roots and spring bud-failure — but follows wet conditions, not a freeze. Drought/desiccation browning resembles scorch. Timing (after a freeze) and species hardiness usually make frost damage clear.

Which species are affected

Tender/tropical species (ficus, fukien tea, bougainvillea, jade, desert rose, brazilian rain tree) are killed by frost; hardy temperate trees survive cold but their potted roots still need protection; evergreens (spruce, yew, cypress) risk winter desiccation.

Treatment

There is no fix for already-frozen tissue — wait and assess in spring (scratch test for green cambium; don't discard too early, as roots may push late). For survivors, protect better next winter. Move tender trees indoors/under glass before cold; for desiccation, shelter from wind and keep the rootball from freezing solid.

Prevention

Overwinter potted roots protected (mulch, cold frame, unheated garage, or heel the pot into the ground); bring tender species in before nights drop below their limit; shelter evergreens from cold drying wind; keep winter trees lightly moist (not bone-dry, not wet).
