About this Yellow Birch Bonsai, 13 Years Old (Betula alleghaniensis)

Betula alleghaniensis, the yellow or golden birch, is a North American native, growing throughout the Adirondack Mountains and across New York State generally, and it takes its common names from bark that peels away in golden, papery strips. This specimen is 13 years old and 17 to 18 inches tall. Catkins appear conspicuously just ahead of the leaves in spring; the foliage emerges a bronzed green, matures to dark green with pointed tips and finely double-toothed margins, then turns bright yellow in autumn. A deciduous tree of cold country by origin, it is grown outdoors.

This is a living Yellow Birch (Betula alleghaniensis). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:

Indoor / outdoor
Outdoor only, year-round. It needs a real winter dormancy
Light
Full sun to part shade; more shade-tolerant than most birches
Water
Water-loving — keep it consistently moist and the roots cool
USDA zones
3a–7b. Very cold-hardy; not recommended south of zone 7
#1 cause of death
Heat and drought stress, which historically let bronze birch borer finish weakened trees within 3–5 years

Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Yellow Birch bonsai care guide.
