About this Whitebarked Himalayan Birch Bonsai, 10 Years Old (Betula utilis 'Jacquemontii')
No birch carries whiter bark than Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, and on a tree of this size, 10 years old and 18 to 19 inches, the effect is unusually direct, the trunk being close to hand rather than high overhead. That bark peels away in fine sheets as the tree puts on age. Leaves are dark green, tapered and toothed along the margin, turning bright yellow before they fall. In spring, catkins hang from the branches in quantity. Deciduous and to be kept outdoors, where winter shows the white trunk at its best.
Himalayan Birch bonsai care
This is a living Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor only, year-round. It needs a real winter dormancy
- Light
- Full sun to part shade. Full sun gives the best bark and autumn colour
- Water
- Water-loving — keep it consistently moist. Birches do not tolerate drying out
- USDA zones
- 4a–7a. Not recommended south of zone 7 — it dislikes heat and humidity
- #1 cause of death
- Letting the roots dry out, which triggers branch dieback — and a stressed birch is exactly what bronze birch borer attacks
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Himalayan Birch bonsai care guide.
