About this Tsukomo Cypress Bonsai, 6 Years Old (Chamaecyparis pisifera)
Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Tsukomo', 6 years old and 6 to 7 inches tall. Native to Japan, it carries scale-like needle foliage that is bright green over spring and summer and turns a slightly duller green through fall and winter. The habit is round to pyramidal. Lower branches are shed while the plant is young, exposing reddish-brown bark that peels away in long strips, and interior branches tend to die out, so annual pruning is used to encourage new growth where it is wanted. It is grown outdoors year-round.
