About this Japanese Black Pine Bonsai, Trained, 14 Years Old (Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead')
A 14-year-old Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead', trained, measuring 16 by 16 inches and 19 inches tall. This compact form of Japanese black pine grows irregularly, and that irregularity supplies much of its character; the outline is tight, low and mounding rather than symmetrical. Dark green needles are packed tightly along every branch, and in winter the tree produces large silver white candles that stand out against the foliage from a considerable distance, carrying as much visual weight as flowers do on other species. Black pine is an outdoor subject and wants an open, sunny position.
