About this Scotch Scots Pine Bonsai, 54 Years Old (Pinus sylvestris 'Albyn')
Pinus sylvestris 'Albyn', 54 years old, measuring 18 by 27 by 20 inches tall. Scots pine is a medium-sized two-needle species, and the needles here run roughly 1.8 to 2.6 inches long, varying in color from mid green to a distinctly blue-toned green. Few conifers claim a wider natural range: it spans Eurasia from western Europe east to Siberia, dropping south into Anatolia and the Caucasus Mountains and running north past the Arctic Circle into Fennoscandia. The bark is comparatively thin and red in color. Grow this one outdoors.
Scots Pine bonsai care
This is a living Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Strictly outdoor, year-round, with a genuine cold winter dormancy
- Light
- Full sun. Strong light shortens needles and keeps growth tight
- Water
- DRY-ish. Prefers slightly drier conditions; water when the top layer dries, never keep the soil soggy, but do not let it bone-dry out
- USDA zones
- Roughly 3–7 (very cold-hardy); native across Europe and northern Asia
- #1 cause of death
- Overwatering / poor drainage leading to root rot
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Scots Pine bonsai care guide.
