About this Professional Bonsai Soil, 2 lb. (1 quart.)
A 2 pound bag, roughly one quart. This is the fired shale aggregate that bonsai growers have long used to keep a mix open: selected shale is expanded and vitrified in a rotary kiln, which leaves hard, porous granules that let air and water pass freely to the root system while doing much to reduce the compaction that closes up ordinary potting soil. A quart is a sensible quantity for potting one or two small trees, or for trying the material before you commit to a larger bag.
