Five quarts of fired shale granules in a 10 pound bag, a middle size for anyone repotting several trees a year. In a rotary kiln, selected shale is expanded and vitrified, which leaves a gritty, angular aggregate that resists slumping and significantly reduces soil compaction in the pot. Water moves through it without hesitation and air follows the water down to the roots, which is the whole purpose of a bonsai mix. Use it straight or blend it with other components to suit what you are potting.
