About this Pin Oak Bonsai, 18 Years Old (Quercus palustris)
Quercus palustris at 18 years, 17 to 19 inches tall, a deciduous North American native that reaches medium size when left in the landscape. Its leaves carry five or seven pointed lobes, each armed with five to seven bristle-tipped teeth, and the sinuses between them are u-shaped and cut so deeply that the open space accounts for roughly as much area as the leaf blade itself. The acorns sit in a shallow, thin cup. Oaks are outdoor trees needing a full winter dormancy, and this one has age enough behind it to show real bark character.
Oak bonsai care
This is a living Oak (Quercus robur). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor year-round. English oak fully hardy; cork oak needs frost protection in cold zones
- Light
- Full sun (both); some afternoon shade in extreme heat
- Water
- Evenly moist in the growing season — oaks are thirsty. Keep just-moist, never waterlogged; cork oak slightly more drought-tolerant
- USDA zones
- Q. robur* ~4–8 (very hardy); *Q. suber* ~8–10 (tender — protect from hard frost)
- #1 cause of death
- Powdery mildew/fungal stress and root problems; for cork oak, cold/frost damage
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Oak bonsai care guide.
