About this Paperbark Maple Bonsai, 14 Years Old (Acer griseum)

14 years in training and now around 20 inches tall, this Chinese native carries the trait that gives the species its name: bark that lifts away in thin orange-copper curls, most striking on the heavier limbs, which continue to thicken as the tree ages. Leaves are a deep, restful green from spring through summer, then turn vivid red before falling. Growth is unhurried and the habit stays compact, so it sits comfortably beside dwarf conifers and other trees of similarly modest scale. Like other maples it belongs outdoors, where the turning of the seasons can register.
