About this Japanese Red Pine Bonsai, 33 Years Old (Pinus densiflora)
Pinus densiflora, 33 years old, 19 by 23 by 25 inches tall. It is hard to name a more handsome evergreen. The common name is earned by the trunk, whose flaky bark peels away to reveal orange tints beneath, and the effect is at its strongest when the tree stands against open blue sky. Japanese tradition assigns the red pine, or matsu, a feminine character, reserving masculinity for the black pine. The evergreen needles are borne two to a bundle. This is an outdoor tree and should be grown that way.

- 4–7 (some sources to 8); notably cold-tolerant for a multi-flush pine
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot/overwatering and decline from mistimed or excessive decandling
