About this Japanese Dwarf Pagoda Holly Bonsai, 9 Years Old (Ilex crenata dwarf)
9 years old at 13 to 14 inches, this dwarf pagoda holly grows so slowly that its proportions barely shift from one season to the next. Ilex crenata 'Pagoda' carries tiny rounded evergreen leaves and the internodes between them are so compressed that the foliage masses densely with little encouragement; small black fruit appears occasionally. It is hardy and belongs outdoors through the year. Slow growth calls for light, frequent trimming rather than hard cutting back, since a shoot taken off now will be a long time in being replaced.
Japanese Holly bonsai care
This is a living Japanese Holly (Ilex serrata). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Strictly outdoor — needs full sun for berries and a cool winter
- Light
- Lots of sun for fruit set; shelter from the most intense midday heat/sun in high summer
- Water
- Keep on the MOIST side — do not let it dry out completely. Water as soon as the surface dries; needs reliable moisture but not waterlogging
- USDA zones
- Roughly Zones 5–8 (*Ilex serrata*); *Ilex crenata* ~Zones 5/6–8. Hardy but protect potted roots from very low temperatures
- #1 cause of death
- Drying out the rootball (and, for berries, simply not having both a male and a female plant); plus root rot from soggy soil
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Japanese Holly bonsai care guide.
