About this Extra Large Flowering Tropical Dwarf Apple Bonsai, 12 Years Old (Clusia rosea 'Nana')
Clusia rosea 'nana' is the dwarf form of a compact evergreen from tropical America, where the full-sized species is planted widely as an ornamental. This one has been grown for 12 years and now stands roughly 15 to 17 inches tall. Its thick, leathery paddle-shaped leaves gave rise to the common name pitch apple, and against them open blossoms of pink and white, followed by oddly shaped fruit that arrangers sometimes cut for display. It is kept as an indoor tree, where warmth, steady light and even watering hold the foliage dense.
Clusia bonsai care
This is a living Clusia (Clusia rosea). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Indoors, with a summer outside once nights are above 50°F
- Light
- Full sun to bright light; tolerates partial shade indoors at the cost of compactness
- Water
- Let it dry slightly between waterings. The thick leaves store water; it is more drought-tolerant than it looks
- USDA zones
- 10b to 11 outdoors year-round; indoors everywhere else
- #1 cause of death
- Root rot from overwatering in a dense mix, often finished off by cold exposure
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Clusia bonsai care guide.
