About this Flowering Pink White Powder Puff Bonsai, 16 Years Old (Calliandra surinamensis)
Calliandra surinamensis at 16 years of age, 20 to 21 inches tall. Its habit is unusual for a bonsai subject in that it extends sideways far more readily than it climbs, giving a wide, layered silhouette. Fresh shoots emerge tinted red before hardening off to green, and the powder puff flowers, half pink and half white, are borne as fine radiating stamens. They appear on and off through the year rather than in one concentrated season. Growth is quick, so expect to keep pace with it when pruning.
