About this Flowering Mountain Fire Japanese Andromeda Bonsai, 13 Years Old (Pieris japonica)

13 years old and 13 to 14 inches tall, this Japanese andromeda earns its cultivar name from the new growth, which emerges a hot red against the older leaves before settling gradually into deep green. The foliage is evergreen and lustrous, so the plant holds substance the year round. In spring, broad clusters of small white flowers droop from the branches in profusion, cooling the red and making the tree's main display. Pieris generally prefers an acid, free-draining soil and shelter from harsh midday sun. Keep it outdoors.
