About this Flowering Jamaican Raintree Bonsai, 12 Years Old (Brya ebenus)
Brya ebenus grows wild on Cuba and Jamaica in the Caribbean and resists drought well once settled. Its leaves are small, waxy and densely set in alternate ranks along the main stems, which gives the tree a plain, uncluttered look from any distance. The name Jamaican raintree comes from its habit of opening sweetly scented bright yellow flowers after rainfall. This specimen is 12 years old and 14 to 15 inches tall, grown as an indoor tree. Because it copes with dry spells, the commonest mistake is watering too often; let the surface dry first.
Jamaican Raintree bonsai care
This is a living Jamaican Raintree (Brya ebenus). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoors in full sun through the warm season; protected in winter
- Light
- Full sun. It flowers poorly or not at all in shade
- Water
- Let it dry between waterings — drought-tolerant once established, and it rots if kept wet
- USDA zones
- 10–11 outdoors year-round; indoor or greenhouse everywhere else
- #1 cause of death
- Overwatering. It is a drought-tolerant tree sold among tropicals that want steady moisture, and it gets watered like its neighbours
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Jamaican Raintree bonsai care guide.
