About this Flowering Heavenly Bamboo Bonsai, 10 Years Old (Nandina domestica 'Firepower')
Nandina domestica 'Firepower', 10 years old and 13 to 14 inches tall. Known also as sacred bamboo, it is no bamboo at all but a relative of the barberry, and the unbranched, reed-like stems are what earned it the name. The foliage is fine and lacy, turning bronze and red over winter. New spring growth opens in a bright bronze red, with large flowers of a creamy white arriving shortly after; over summer the plant sets clusters of berries in bright green. This is a tough evergreen for outdoors, where its seasonal color shifts show best.
