About this Flowering Campeche Bonsai, 16 Years Old (Haematoxylum campechianum)
Haematoxylum translates as bloodwood, a nod to the dark red heartwood within the trunk. Campeche, the common name, comes from the coastal city on the Yucatan Peninsula that was once an important source of that valuable timber. It grows abundantly in parts of Puerto Rico as well, an ornamental that puts on height quickly. Its foliage is made up of several pairs of small leaflets, giving the canopy a light, feathery quality. This specimen is 16 years old and 17 to 18 inches tall, kept indoors, and 16 seasons of growth have given the trunk real substance.
Logwood bonsai care
This is a living Logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoors through the warm season; indoors well before nights approach 40°F
- Light
- Sun-loving; give it the brightest position available
- Water
- Water-loving — it wants a steady supply of moisture, in a mix that still drains
- USDA zones
- 10–11 outdoors year-round; indoors or greenhouse everywhere else
- #1 cause of death
- Cold. The 40°F limit is higher than most people expect and catches owners out in autumn
