About this Flowering Buttonwood Bonsai, 60 Years Old (Conocarpus erectus)
A specimen buttonwood of roughly 55 to 60 years, Conocarpus erectus, standing 31 inches overall with a 24 by 29 inch base; measured from the top of the soil to the apex it is 19 inches. The bark is gray-brown and fissured, the leaves light green, leathery and wavy along their margins. It flowers in small greenish to purplish clusters, and the fruit that follows is red-brown, globular and button-like, around 1/2" in diameter. It makes a good indoor bonsai and, in keeping with its coastal origins, appreciates humid air.
Buttonwood bonsai care
This is a living Buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus). Before you buy, this is what it will ask of you:
- Indoor / outdoor
- Outdoor sun-lover; in cold climates summer outside, protect or bring in for winter
- Light
- Full sun: the more the better. A true sun-worshipper that needs maximum light
- Water
- Moderate to moist: a coastal/swamp species that likes regular water and even tolerates damp soil, but the pot must still drain. Not a "let it dry hard" tree.
- USDA zones
- 10b to 11 outdoors year-round; must be protected/indoors below zone 10
- #1 cause of death
- Cold/frost damage, and dieback after over-aggressive root work or repotting at the wrong time
Soil, repotting, pruning, seasonal work and the full pest and disease list are in our free Buttonwood bonsai care guide.
