Five pounds, around 2.5 quarts, of volcanic cinder from Colorado, enough to run through several batches of soil. The porous structure delivers two useful things at once: low weight, and the capacity to hold as much as 40 percent of its weight in water. Incorporate it into your mix to increase drainage and aeration at the root ball. At 1/4 inch the particles are sharp and irregular, so they sit loosely against one another and leave air spaces instead of settling into a dense layer.
