For anyone mixing soil in quantity, the 20 pound bag holds roughly 10 quarts of the same quarter inch Colorado cinder. Lava forms with an open, porous structure, so although it will absorb up to 40 percent of its weight in water it stays light both in the hand and in the pot. Blend it into a bonsai mix wherever you want more aeration and faster drainage. The grains are sharp edged rather than rounded, which is precisely why lava outperforms sand here.
