Two pounds of Colorado lava rock, about a quart, in a small 1/4 inch grade. Lava is volcanic cinder, formed naturally, and its porous structure makes it both light in the hand and highly moisture retentive, absorbing up to 40 percent of its weight in water. Worked into a bonsai soil mix it increases drainage and aeration. The grains are sharp with very irregular surfaces, which is exactly why small lava makes such a good sand component compared with smooth rounded grit.
